When you think about building muscle, I am sure the last thing on your mind is stretching. At Ocean Pacific Gym, the best gym in San Diego, we're here to change that misconception by focusing on BOTH strength and flexibility. Stretching isn’t just about flexibility—it’s a crucial tool for optimizing muscle growth, especially as we age. Let’s break this down…

What is Fascia? Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds the muscles. It plays a key role in muscle development. Think of your muscles like balloons inside a box; tight fascia restricts their growth potential. By incorporating stretching into your routine, you can intentionally expand this fascia, allowing your muscles to grow more freely and without restriction. What does this mean?? More muscle = More gains!

Let’s talk about the Benefits of Stretching for Muscle Growth.

  1. Increased Blood Flow: Stretching enhances blood circulation around your muscles, which increases oxygen delivery and promots muscle growth. Research shows that stretching after a workout can significantly boost lean muscle mass in just four short weeks. We know you are anxious to exit the gym when you are done with your workout but don’t waste this opportunity to maximize your gains by stretching it out…

  2. Improved Flexibility and Range of Motion: Maintaining flexibility is crucial, especially as you age. Stretching helps preserve mobility, which allows you to stay active and support continuous muscle development. If you are seeing long term muscle and longevity, flexibility is ESSENTIAL to your gains.

  3. Toxin Elimination: Stretching helps to flush out toxins, like lactic acid, from your muscles. This reduces soreness, and supports faster recovery after workouts. If you are feeling sore after your workouts or not recovering properly, a few minutes of stretching can do you some good.

Incorporating Stretching into Your Routine.

At Ocean Pacific Gym, we advocate for incorporating stretching into your fitness routine in order to maximize muscle gains and increase mobility. As a wellness gym, we understand the importance of BOTH. Here is how you can add stretching into your daily routine.

Pre-Workout: Spend 5-minutes stretching to increase blood flow and prepare your muscles for exercise. Our group class room is open for members to utilize equipment at your leisure. If there is not a class going on, take advantage of the room to get your stretch on before you step into the gym to crush it.

Post-Workout: Commit to 5-10 minutes to cool down with stretches, utilizing increased blood flow to aid muscle recovery and toxin elimination. Just as important as your pre-workout stretching is your post-workout routine.

During Workouts: Take brief 30-second stretching breaks between sets or rounds to maintain muscle elasticity and performance. Drop the scroll, in between sets, and focus on stretching instead. Committing to your stretching routine in between stretching WILL maximize your muscle gains.

Take a Class: Whether you take a day to focus soley on flexibility and mobility or combine your workout with a class, we are here to support your goals.
